Caring for Your Sisal/ Reed Baskets and Accessories

Utu Vikapu and Viondoo are handcrafted using natural materials such as palm leaves, sisal, and yarn. With proper use and care, they will remain beautiful, strong, and functional for many years. Here are tips on how to properly use, clean, dry, and store your African baskets:

How to Use

  • Since natural fibers absorb oils easily, always handle your baskets with clean, dry hands
  • Small strands will appear over time. Trim the loose fibers with scissors- do not pull
  • Line with a clean cloth or paper towel to protect the basket from food spills, grease, or dirt transfer
  • Place a waterproof liner or saucer inside when using the basket for plants. This will prevent moisture from reaching the base and causing rot.

Cleaning & Drying

  • Dust regularly with a dry cloth, feather duster, or soft brush to remove dust from the woven crevices.
  • Spot-clean gently with a damp, well-wrung cloth and mild soap, and warm water to remove stains, and dry the basket immediately.
  • Excess water weakens fibers and distort shape, therefore, DO NOT soak or over-wet your Kikapu/Kiondoo.
  • For mold: gently brush off or wipe with diluted white vinegar (1:4- 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water), then dry thoroughly.
  • Keep your Kikapu dry at all times because moisture causes mold and mildew.
  • If wet, air-dry immediately in the sun or a ventilated area

Storage

  • Store in a clean, cool, dry, and well-ventilated place to protect the baskets from insects that may damage natural materials.
  • Avoid humidity, damp/wet areas, unventilated spaces, or prolonged direct sunlight (too much direct sunlight causes the colours to fade and fibers to dry out)
  • DO NOT put heavy items on top of the Kikapu/Kiondoo.
  • Stuff with clean paper or cloth to retain shape
  • If your basket bends or flattens, you can reshape it by lightly misting with water, gently reshaping by hand, and allowing it to dry in the shade.

Thank you for choosing our thoughtfully made, natural Utu Vikapu and Viondoo.
